I'm pretty sure Sony REALLY just wanted to have something working before the Christmas shopping started, especially now that the price has gone down on the PS3. Here's a quote from an interview with a Netflix employee stating that they are working on an embedded solution: "Again, the instant streaming disc represented the fastest and easiest way to let PS3 enthusiasts get Netflix on the PS3.
